Founded by Doria family in 1102 as a fortress, the city of Castelsardo is famous for the appearance of its old town perched on a high promontory in the center of the Gulf of Asinara. Currently Castelsardo, capital of Anglona, is the most visited tourist destinations of Sardinia and it is in the list of the most beautiful towns in Italy. The fortress of Castelsardo is still enclosed by the original walls. The houses around the castle have narrow streets paved with local stone. These streets are transformed during the festivities of May “Castellano” in dance floors, windows with colored flowers and lots of fun. In 1512 the castle structure was reinforced and the walls were added to the “Spur” and the “small loggias”. The castle now lodges the Museum of the embroidery, while from its walls you can see a fantastic landscape from Asinara to Corsica, from S. Teresa di Gallura to Limbara mountain, from Gallura to Porto Torres.
